Carpentry (Intermediate)

Recipients of the  Carpentry Work (Intermediate) credential have demonstrated concept proficiency and completed  the following tasks:

Activity 1 – Identifying and Sorting Fasteners
(a) Identifies screws and places in correct bin.
(b) Identifies nails and places in correct bin.
(c) Identifies bolts and places in correct bin.
(d) Identifes washers and nuts and places in correct bin.
(e) Identifies hinges and places in correct bin.
(f) Sorts all fasteners without aids in correct bin.
(g) Cleans area and puts away materials.

Activity 2 – Using Screws and Nails
(a) Puts on safety goggles.
(b) Uses nail to make a pilot hole.
(c) Drives screw into wood using the correct screwdriver.
(d) Removes screw from wood.
(e) Drives nail into wood with a hammer.
(f) Removes nail from wood with claw of hammer.
(g) Cleans area and puts away materials.

Activity 3 – Operating a Power Hand Drill/Screwdriver
(a) Reviews safety handouts before beginning activity.
(b) Reads operatorʼs manual before beginning activity.
(c) Makes sure switch is in OFF position before beginning.
(d) Puts on safety goggles.
(e) Selects correct bit and inserts in the chuck.
(f) Tightens the chuck to secure the bit.
(g) Applies the correct amount of pressure to drill a hole in the wood.
(h) Drills two pilot holes in the wood.
(i) Inserts bit into power screwdriver and drives two screws into the wood.
(j) Adjusts torque by increasing or decreasing the settings
(k) Removes all screws after completion
(l) Cleans area and puts away materials

Activity 4 – Identifying Wood and other Building Materials
(a) Identifies wood samples by correct classification.
(b) Identifies wood samples by correct type.
(c) Identifies wood samples correctly by how they are used.
(d) Identifies sample of sheet rock by name.
(e) Drives a nail into block of softwood and hardwood and compares.
(f) Continues with identification process until accurately identifies all samples.
(g) Cleans area and puts away materials.

Activity 5 – Measuring
(a) Accurately measures and completes measuring worksheets.
(b) Uses tape measure to accurately measure objects in feet.
(c) Accurately completes worksheet on calculating areas.
(d) Computes areas of objects measured.
(e) Measures accurately with a ruler to the 1/4 mark.
(f) Measures accurately with a ruler to the1/2 mark.
(g) Measures accurately with a ruler to the 3/4 mark.
(h) Measures accurately with a ruler to the 1/8 mark.
(i) Measures accurately with a ruler to the 1/16th mark.
(j) Measures accurately with a ruler to the 1” mark.
(k) Cleans area and puts away materials.

Activity 6 – Making a Box
(a) Puts on safety goggles.
(b) Uses hammer and nails to fasten pieces of wood together.
(c) Attaches hinges by driving screws to top piece of wood on box.
(d) Sands box to smooth finish.
(e) Paints and decorates box.
(f) Cleans area and puts away materials.

Activity 7 – Maintaining Tools
(a) Cleans tools with soap and water.
(b) Cleans tools with rubbing alcohol.
(c) Removes rust from tool with steel wool pad.
(d) Dries tool and wipes oil on tool with soft cloth.
(e) Cleans area and puts away materials.
