Construction Trades (Basic Skills)

Recipients of the Construction Trades (Basic Skills) credential have demonstrated concept proficiency and completed the following tasks:

Student demonstrates work ethics and general employability skills:

  1. __ Reports to work area and dresses appropriately for work
  2. __ Has all supplies needed to perform work
  3. __ Starts work promptly
  4. __ Asks instructor for assistance if needed
  5. __ Stays on task. (Does not abuse bathroom or water breaks)
  6. __ Follows safety rules and demonstrates correct social skills at all times
  7. __ Asks instructor/employer for work assignment if necessary
  8. __ Cleans up work area at the end of the period without being asked
  9. __ Works cooperatively with others on group projects
  10. __ Works independently after being assigned a task
  11. __ Accepts constructive criticism
  12. __ Notifies school/employer of absence or tardiness
  13. __ Accepts and performs additional tasks willingly

 
Student maintains a safe work environment by:

  1. __ Following universal safety precautions
  2. __ Storing all equipment, materials and supplies correctly
  3. __ Following clean-up procedures at end of the workday
  4. __ Performing basic and/or routine maintenance of equipment

 
Student is familiar with safety concepts and safe work habits:

  1. __ Displays a safe attitude when working
  2. __ Performs work in a safe manner without being told
  3. __ Identifies potential dangers and understands their consequences in independent work situations

 
Student will demonstrate an understanding of the tools and equipment used in electrical wiring:

  1. __ Identifies general safety rules in electrical wiring.
  2. __ Identifies general safety precautions necessary to perform wiring activities.
  3. __ Demonstrates an understanding of electricity vocabulary.

 
Student will demonstrate proficiency in matching color-coded wires used in electrical wiring:

  1. __ Identifies the use of color-coded wires
  2. __ Identifies tools and equipment necessary to match wiring
  3. __ Demonstrates proficiency in matching color-coded wires to spring clip

 
Student will be able to solder and desolder:

  1. __ Identify tools and equipment necessary to solder and desolder
  2. __ Learn proper techniques for soldering
  3. __ Demonstrate proper techniques for soldering and desoldering
  4. __ Clean tools correctly
  5. __ Practice safe work habits

 
Student will demonstrate proficiency in splicing and soldering cables:

  1. __ Identify tools and equipment necessary to splice and solder cables
  2. __ Identify three types of splices used
  3. __ Demonstrate proper techniques used to complete a pigtail, western union, and bunch splice and solder splices correctly

 
Student will demonstrate correct procedures used in taping splices:

  1. __ Identify tools and equipment used in taping splices
  2. __ Demonstrate proper techniques used to bend, tape, re-tape and wrap splices
  3. __ Practice safe work habits
  4. __ Clean work area

 
Student will wire circuits:

  1. __ Understand the concepts of an electrical circuit
  2. __ Create an electrical circuit using a circuit board
  3. __ Understand the difference between an open and closed circuit
  4. __ Understand the difference between series and parallel circuits
  5. __ Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment
  6. __ Practice safe work habits

 
Student will be able to identify plumbing safety rules, general installation rules and vocabulary:

  1. __ Identify general hand tool safety
  2. __ Demonstrate understanding of general installation rules
  3. __ Define vocabulary used in plumbing

 
Student will demonstrate ability to accurately measure items:

  1. __ Identify and measure 1/16″ mark
  2. __ Identify and measure 1/4” mark on the 16th scale
  3. __ Identify and measure the 1/8″ on the 16th scale
  4. __ Identify and measure the 1/2” mark on the 16th scale
  5. __ Identify and measure the 3/4” mark on the 16th scale
  6. __ Measure distance in inches and feet

 
Student will properly cut and de-burr galvanized pipe:

  1. __ Identify equipment used to cut and de-burr galvanized pipe
  2. __ Demonstrate ability to measure pipe
  3. __ Demonstrate proficient use of pipe vise and pipe cutter
  4. __ Use round file to de-burr pipe correctly
  5. __ Practice safe work habits
  6. __ Clean work area

 
Student will thread pipe and install union and elbow:

  1. __ Identify tools and equipment used to thread and attach pipe
  2. __ Use pipe threader properly
  3. __ Identify functions of die/guide
  4. __ Demonstrate proficiency in use of die/guide and ratchet
  5. __ Demonstrate ability to thread pipe and install union and elbow properly

 
Student will demonstrate proficiency in fitting flexible and rigid copper tubing:

  1. __ Identify tools and equipment used to fit copper tubing
  2. __ Demonstrate ability to measure tubing
  3. __ Demonstrate proper use of tools and equipment
  4. __ Demonstrate proper techniques used to fit flexible and rigid copper tubing

 
Student will demonstrate understanding of masonry tools, equipment and vocabulary:

  1. __ Identify and use masonry tools and equipment
  2. __ Demonstrate an understanding of the vocabulary of masonry

 
Student will prepare and mix concrete:

  1. __ Identify properties of concrete
  2. __ Conduct slump test properly
  3. __ Prepare and mix concrete
  4. __Clean work area

 
Student will demonstrate correct procedures in pouring and finishing a concrete patio block:

  1. __ Assemble tools and equipment necessary
  2. __ Demonstrates proficiency in pouring and finishing concrete patio block
  3. __ Clean tools and work area

 
Student will demonstrate proficiency in tying reinforcement rods:

  1. __ Identifies tools and equipment necessary to tie rods
  2. __ Understands use of rods in reinforcing concrete
  3. __ Demonstrates proficiency in completing snap and saddle ties
  4. __ Practice safe work habits

 
Student will demonstrate correct procedures for constructing a straight section of concrete block wall:

  1. __ Identify and use masonry tools
  2. __ Demonstrate proficiency in mixing mortar
  3. __ Demonstrate correct techniques used in constructing a section of concrete blockwall
  4. __ Clean tools and work area

 

Student will demonstrate understanding of wallcovering tools, equipment and vocabulary:

  1. __ Identify and use vocabulary
  2. __ Identify tools and equipment used in wallcovering

 

Student will demonstrate correct procedures used in installing and finishing drywall:

  1. __ Demonstrate proficiency in installing drywall.
  2. __ Demonstrate correct procedures used in finishing drywall.
  3. __ Correctly use joint compound to fill holes and tape joints.
  4. __ Practice safe work habits
  5. __ Clean tools and work area

 

Student will demonstrate an awareness of career opportunities in the construction trades industry:

  1. __ Develop an awareness of job opportunities available in the construction trades industry
  2. __ Select occupations of interest
