Hair Care & Styling (Adapted)

Recipients of the Hair Care & Styling (Adapted) credential have demonstrated concept proficiency and completed the following tasks:

Activity 1:   Setting up a Hair Care Station

1.     Gather materials.
2.     Lay the towel flat on the table.
3.     Put the round brush on the top left side of the towel.
4.     Put the comb on the right side of the brush.
5.     Put the shampoo on the right side of the comb.
6.      Place the styling lotion to the right of the shampoo.
7.      Place the hair spray below the brush.
8.      Place the small rollers below the comb.
9.      Place the medium size rollers below the shampoo.
10.   Place the large rollers below the styling lotion.
11.   Place the curl clips below the small rollers.
12.   Place the barrettes below the medium size rollers.
13.   Place the hair dryer beside the towel.
14.   Always hold the curling iron by the handle and tip end in case it is hot.  Place the curling iron beside the towel.  If it is hot, it could burn the towel!
15.   Have your teacher check your work.
16.   Clean up your work area.

Activity 2:   Brushing, Combing & Styling Hair

1.     Gather materials.
2.     Put the headstand on the table.
3.     Put the styrofoam head on the headstand.
4.     Put the wig on the styrofoam head.  Have someone help you, if needed.
5.     Use the comb to section off a small strand of hair.  Comb the hair.
6.      Get a small sized roller and start at the end of the hair.  Roll the hair on the roller up to the scalp.
7.      Secure the roller with a curl clip.
8.      Use the comb to section off another piece of hair.  Then use a medium sized roller to roll that strand of hair as before.
9.      Secure the roller with a curl clip.
10.   Use the comb to section off another piece of hair.  Then use a large sized roller to roll that strand of hair as before.
11.   Secure the roller with a curl clip.
12.   Have your teacher check your work.
13.  Now take out the rollers.  Use the styling brush to brush the hair.
14.   Clean up your work area.

Activity 3:   Preparing Customers for a Color & Shampoo

1.     Gather materials.
2.     Greet your customer.  Tell her that you will be preparing the customer for a hair color and shampoo today.
3.     Seat your customer in the chair.
4.     Gently wrap the shampoo cape around the customer’s neck.
5.     Fasten the shampoo cape at the neck.
6.      Brush the customer’s hair to remove any tangles.
7.      For your hair color, mix equal parts of baking soda and water in the bowl.
8.      Have your teacher check your work.
9.      Clean up your work area.

Activity 4:   Making Appointments

1.     Gather materials.
2.     Get out the Making Appointments Worksheet and a pencil.
3.     You are going to make an appointment for the hair care worker.  Mrs. Garcia called and wants a shampoo and set.  What time can you make the appointment?
4.     Enter the name and task on the appointment sheet.
5.     Ms. Brown wants a haircut.  What time can you make the appointment?
6.      Enter the name and task on the appointment sheet.
7.      Have your teacher check your work.
8.      Clean up your work area.

Activity 5:   Filling an Order

1.     Gather materials.
2.     Get a Hair care order form and pencil.
3.     Locate the first product on the order form.
4.     Place the item in the bag.
5.     Put a check in the circle on the form.
6.      Locate the second product on the order form.
7.      Place the item in the bag.
8.      Put a check in the circle on the form.
9.      Continue until all items are in the bag.
10.   Get a calculator.
11.   Use the calculator to multiply the amount of each item by the cost for one item.
12.   Write the amount in the total box for that item.
13.   Continue for all items.
14.   Use the calculator to add the cost of all items in the bag.  Write the total amount on the order form.
15.   Have your teacher check your work.
16.   Clean up your work area.
