Recipients of the Small Engine Repair (Adapted) credential have demonstrated concept proficiency and completed the following tasks:
Activity 1: Identifying and Labeling Tools
1. Gather materials. |
2. Ask your teacher to help find the correct tools in the small engine repair kit. |
3. Put the tools on the table. |
4. Place the Identifying Tools Matching Sheets on table. |
5. Match each tool to the correct picture. |
6. Have your teacher check your work. |
7. Clean up your work area. |
Activity 2: Setting up to Change the Engine Oil
1. Gather materials. |
2. Use the matching paper to help you find the correct tools to change the engine oil. |
3. First, spread the drop cloth on the work surface. |
4. Place the small engine on top of the block on the drop cloth. |
5. Place the tools next to the small engine. |
6. Use the matching paper to make sure that you have the correct tools. |
7. Have your teacher check your work. |
8. Clean up your work area. |
Activity 3: Using an Adjustable Wrench to Remove Oil Drain Plug
1. Gather materials. |
2. Caution: Do not work on an engine without a mechanic or other adult with you. Put the drop cloth on the table. Put materials on the drop cloth. |
3. Put on your safety goggles and mask before using tools. |
4. Find the oil drain plug on the small engine. |
5. Put the small engine on a block. Put the drain pan under the oil drain plug. |
6. Get the adjustable wrench. Put the wrench on the bolt on the oil drain plug. |
7. Adjust wrench to bolt. Turn wrench to the left. |
8. Remove the oil drain plug from the small engine. |
9. Have your teacher check your work. Put the drain plug back in the engine. |
10. Turn drain plug to right with adjustable wrench to tighten. Clean up your work area. |
Activity 4: Cleaning the Spark Plug
1. Gather materials. |
2. Spread the drop cloth over the table. |
3. Put on your mask, gloves and safety goggles before using the tools |
4. Put the spark plug, the wire brush and the canned air on the table. |
5. Caution: Do not use a wire brush unless an adult is with you. Pick up the wire brush and rub the wire bristles over the spark plug until the dirt is removed. |
6. Take the canned air and blow off the spark plug. |
7. Have your teacher check your work. |
8. Clean up your work area. |

1. Gather materials. |
2. Use the Checking the Spark Plug Worksheets to help you get the correct tools. |
3. Have your teacher check your work. |
4. Clean up your work area and put your tools away. |
Activity 6: Stocking Shelves
1. Gather materials. |
2. Put the stocking shelves pictures on the table. |
3. Mix the stocking shelves items and put on table. |
4. Find the correct shelf for the item. |
5. Put the item on the correct shelf. |
6. Continue until all items are on the correct shelf. |
7. Have your teacher check your work. |
8. Clean up your work area. |
